The Daily Nation was on Wednesday forced to issue a clarification for the second time in a row over fake headline circulating on social media.

The fake headline, bearing  “7B fake money linked to Raila’s close allies,” was packaged in a similar design as the Daily Nation.

However, some stories on the fake front page captured trending stories in the country.

The media group took to its social media handles to clarify the issue.

“Here is today’s Daily Nation front page. Do not fall for fake headlines.#FakeNewsAlert,” Daily Nation stated.

Barely two weeks ago, another fake headline “Jimmy Wanjigi Paid 6.5 Billion for Dams,” which was packaged as the Daily Nation newspaper, circulated on social media forcing the media house to speak out.

The genuine headline was “Gloves off as Ruto allies take on Uhuru.”

It was not immediately clear the motive behind the ‘fake headlines’, but netizens who reacted after the clarification alluded to people out to taint the image of people mentioned on the headlines.

The issue of fake news has been on the rise with some people taking advantage of social media to spread propaganda.

Last year, the local daily was on the spot over a fake business man Jimi Wanjigi obituary on its page 49. He later sued the paper.

Wanjigi demanded that the publication pay Sh100 million for infringement of his privacy. Wanjigi said that his privacy was infringed upon as the publication published the names of his children, where they lived and schooled.

The businessman also said that the obituary caused him mental anguish. He said that the obituary amounted to threats to his life.
