Following the story of nominated MP David Ole Sankok paints a picture of a man who has come from rags to riches, inspired by childhood memories.

However, putting it under the microscope paints another picture, of a pathological liar, ready to spit lies to remain relevant, and advance his business agenda.

One of the lies is that he is a medical doctor who graduated from the University of Nairobi (UoN).

According to one doctor, Lukoye W’Atwoli, Sankok is nowhere near the medical profession, let alone his daydreams that he is a surgeon.

“One of the biggest problem in Kenya is quackery, fakery and impersonation. Here is a person without any medical qualification passing himself off as a surgeon. For his pains, he was nominated to parliament,” said W’Atwoli.

The MP is so sly that he even convinced mainstream journalists that he is a surgeon, even without showing papers of his qualification. In an article published by the Standard yesterday, the paper was easily duped by Sankok to believe his lies, without showing where he practised as a surgeon.

“Changing his path led him to become a top student at school, was admitted to the University of Nairobi to study medicine, become a surgeon and ventured into entrepreneurship and politics,” reports the paper.

According to sources who were with him at the UoN, Sankok pursued nursing in the late 90s, but did not finish his studies. He was expelled following students’ unrest during his tenure as the Student Organisation of the Nairobi University (Sonu) chairman.

“The man was chairman of Sonu circa 1999. He studied BSc Nursing and not medicine. I am not sure whether he finished his course. His disability was most likely du to poliomyelitis and not a medical mistake. This man lives a lie. His story should be told correctly,” said another doctor who knows him. We could not mention his name for lack of consent.

In the article published by the Standard, Sankok indicated that his disability was as a result of a wrong injection during his childhood.

“I contracted pneumonia and my parents rushed me to the nearest clinic in the middle of the night. The doctor who gave me an injection hit the wrong nerve. The next day, though my fever was gone, I couldn’t move my leg. One week later, a doctor at Kijabe hospital told me I would never walk,” said Sankok as quoted by the publication.

He also admits being corrupt in the article, receiving hundreds of thousands from the UoN administration to calm rioting students at the institution.

“I was called to study medicine at the University of Nairobi and in 2000 became the chairman of the Student Organisation of Nairobi University (Sonu). I was shrewd even here, and it was common for me, when we rioted, to be summoned to the highest offices of the country and asked to quell the demonstrations. This came with money, sometimes up to Sh300,000 which I distributed among the student leaders, ending the riots,” he says.

Individual doctors are calling upon the government to crack whip and rid the country off quacks like Sankok, who are lying to the public.
