Anglo-leasing whistle blower John Githongo has asserted that he will appeal the a ruling made on Thursday that ordered him to award former Minister Chris Murungaru Ksh27 million.

In a statement issued by Githongo, he expressed his disappointment over the ruling on a matter that was brought against him by former Internal Security Minister Murungaru.

He stated: “It is my plan to appeal this judgement vigorously as possible. ”

Githongo further revealed that the court had disallowed his witness evidence and he intends to appeal the matter on that ground.

In the ruling delivered on Thursday, the court in Nairobi directed Mr Githongo to pay Murangaru Ksh20 million in general damages, Ksh5 million in exemplary damages and Ksh2 million special damages.

He was also ordered to settle full interest on the award until Murungaru receives all his money and the costs of the suit.

This case was filed following the revelation of Anglo-Leasing scandal in which former President Mwai Kibaki’s regime lost billions of shillings in phantom security printing contracts.

The scandal saw Anglo-leasing finance paid Ksh2.7 billion to supply the Kenyan government with a system to print new high-technology passports.

Githongo has on Thursday vowed to keep his fight against the corruption scheme.

He further affirmed in his statement: “Sadly, the Anglo Leasing model of misappropriation of resources from the Kenyan people has continued unabated since 2001.

“I refuse to lose perspective as a result of this latest development. Over the past six years in particular the plunder of public resources has accelerated to levels unprecedented in Kenyan history since independence.

““I remain committed to continuing the fight against corruption in Kenya and I’m undeterred by distractions engineered by the very thieves stealing from Kenyans,” the then permanent secretary stated.

Githongo, who resigned from the then cabinet, went into exile after shading light on the scandal that ‘shook’ Kibaki’s government.
