A couple in Homa Bay has been busted for lying that they were expectant and that they delivered a set of twins who died at birth.

It was later discovered that the couple had buried dolls in separate coffins after residents dug out the fresh graves.

The couple, Beryl Akinyi and her husband Benson Onyango, are reported to have hurriedly buried their alleged newborn twins whom they told neighbors that they died at birth, on Tuesday evening without the presence of their relatives and friends.

According to Akinyi’s brother-in-law Wycliffe Ogembo, the woman left home two weeks ago to give birth at Homa Bay County Referral Hospital.

However, in confirming her claims, Homa Bay County Referral Hospital CEO Lilian Kocholla noted that the facility does not have a recent record of Ms Akinyi.

In her defense, Akinyi informed her relatives that she had been refereed to Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu and later Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi after she developed some complications.

Her family however exclaims that they became suspicious of the numerous referrals and how within a short time she had traveled to two towns.

Ogembo then narrates that he was informed on Monday evening that Akinyi had delivered twins but they died.

It is then reported that Benson, Akinyi’s husband, who is a carpenter, made two coffins on Tuesday morning and by evening they had buried the ‘twins.’

Ogembo further complained that no one saw the bodies of the said twins before the burial hence the raise of concerns from family and neighbors.

The concerns led to the locals digging up the graves only to find two baby dolls, the angry residents then turned to the couple and attacked them.

The two were saved by police who rescued them from the scene and detained them at Mbita Police Station.
Homa Bay County police boss Esther Seroney noted that Ms Akinyi would be taken to hospital to ascertain whether she really gave birth.
