Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri has fired National Cereals and Produce Board acting Managing Director Albin Sang.

In a statement shared on Monday, the CS noted that he had consequently appointed the deputy director agriculture, Zachary Magara, to replace Sang.

Before his appointment at Kilimo House, Magara served as the head of Horticulture.

Albin Sang was appointed as the acting managing director in March, 2018 following the resignation of Newton Terer.

Terer stepped aside to allow for the completion of investigations by the Board Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Director of Criminal Investigation (DCI) over an alleged irregularity on the maize purchase as well as the distribution of subsidized fertilizer.

At the time, Agriculture Principal Secretary Richard Lesiyampe noted: “Newton Terer resigned and the board accepted his resignation. Mr. Terer was not coerced, intimidated or suspended prior to his resignation.”

Sang took over operations at a time when the board was marred with scandals including various malpractices.

A Ksh7 billion maize scandal rocked the cereals board by mid-2018, leading to the CS appearing several times before parliamentary committees to explain the state of the board.
