Akshata Narayana Murty, born on 25 April 1980 in Hubballi (also known as Hubli), Karnataka, India, is an Indian businesswoman, fashion designer, venture capitalist, and heiress.
She is the daughter of N. R. Narayana Murthy, co-founder of the multinational information technology company Infosys, and Sudha Murty, an engineer, author, philanthropist, and former chairperson of the Infosys Foundation.
Raised initially by her maternal grandparents while her parents focused on establishing Infosys, she later grew up in Bengaluru’s Jayanagar neighbourhood with her family.
Murty holds Indian citizenship and is married to Rishi Sunak, the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom; the couple wed in August 2009 after meeting as students at Stanford University and have two daughters, Krishna and Anoushka.
She speaks English, Hindi, Kannada, and French.
Siblings
Akshata has one sibling, her younger brother Rohan Narayana Murty, born around 1982–1983 in Hubballi, Karnataka.
Like his sister, Rohan was raised in Bengaluru in a household that emphasized education, reading, and family discussions over television.
He attended Bishop Cotton Boys’ School in Bangalore before studying computer science at Cornell University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree, and later completing a PhD in computer science/engineering at Harvard University in 2011, with research focused on opportunistic wireless networks.
Rohan has pursued an academic and entrepreneurial path distinct from pure inheritance of the family business.
He served briefly as an executive assistant and later vice president at Infosys during his father’s return to the company around 2013–2014.
He is the founder of the Murty Classical Library of India, a project dedicated to translating and publishing classical Indian literature in accessible English editions.
He co-founded Soroco, a digital transformation and process automation company using artificial intelligence, where he has served as founder and CTO, and more recently founded Workfabric AI.
He was also a junior fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows.
Career
After attending Baldwin Girls’ High School in Bengaluru, Akshata Murty studied economics and French at Claremont McKenna College in California, graduating around 2002.

She earned a diploma in clothes manufacturing from the Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising in Los Angeles and later completed a Master of Business Administration at Stanford University.
Early professional experience included short stints at firms such as Deloitte and Unilever.
In 2007 she joined the Dutch cleantech firm Tendris as marketing director, remaining there for about two years.
In 2009 she launched her own fashion label, Akshata Designs, based in California, which focused on collaborating with local artisans in India to preserve traditional craftsmanship; the venture operated until approximately 2012 or 2013.
She subsequently shifted toward investment and board roles.
Murty has served as a director of Catamaran Ventures (the family’s UK-linked investment vehicle), Digme Fitness, and the UK arm of Soroco, the digital transformation company co-founded by her brother.
She has held stakes or investments connected to businesses including Jamie Oliver restaurant ventures, Wendy’s in India, and Koru Kids, alongside her substantial Infosys shareholding.
Her career reflects a blend of creative entrepreneurship in fashion with venture capital and corporate governance, influenced by her family’s emphasis on business as a means of broader impact.
Accolades
Murty’s wealth and Infosys stake have drawn significant media attention, with rankings at times placing her among the wealthiest individuals in Britain.
She has been noted for her support of cultural and philanthropic causes aligned with family values, including involvement with the Murty Classical Library of India.
In 2026 she served as a jury member for the NDTV Masterstroke Art Awards, recognizing excellence in the arts.
Public appearances, such as attending her mother Sudha Murty’s Padma Bhushan ceremony in 2023 and delivering speeches (including at the Conservative Party Conference), have further highlighted her profile.
