Gunmen believed to be part of the al-Shabaab militant group on Monday night attacked Omar Jillo location, Lafey Sub County in Mandera East, where they killed a chief and abducted two Kenya Police Reservists.
According to eye witnesses, the gunmen then made their way towards Somalia which is about seven kilometres away from Omar Jillo.
North Eastern regional coordinator Mohamud Saleh said two KPR officers are missing after the incident.
“We don’t know if they were abducted or they are in hiding. The gang shot randomly shooting him six times at around 10 pm in his home,” Saleh said.
Saleh said the chief was a year old in his work and was very thorough.
“He was a very active chief. He was good in his work and we don’t know if that is why he was targeted.”
Locals said they heard at least six gunshots before the chief was realized to have been fatally wounded. Omar Jillo is among towns in the area under dusk to dawn curfew over insecurity linked to Al-Shabaab terrorists.
The other towns are Mandera Town, Arabia, Fino, Lafey Kotulo and Elwak. Witnesses in the area said contingents of security personnel led by Kenya Defence Forces had moved to the area while looking for the attackers.
On Thursday night, a miner in a quarry in Elwak was killed before communication equipment in Amuma area was destroyed.
