Ex-don Birundu, ex-MP Tongi step up bid to unseat Jhanda in Kisii’s Nyaribari Chache

The political contest for the Nyaribari Chache parliamentary seat in Kisii County is gaining momentum following the entry of former university lecturer Dr Birundu Mogendi.

Dr Mogendi joins a widening field of aspirants that includes former area MP Richard Tongi and Okongo Nyambane, all seeking to unseat incumbent Zaheer Jhanda of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

The three hopefuls have launched parallel campaigns across the constituency, each positioning themselves as the best alternative ahead of the next general election.

Dr Mogendi, a lecturer-turned-consultant, has anchored his campaign on grassroots mobilisation. Addressing residents on Sunday, he urged voters—particularly the youth—to register in large numbers and actively participate in shaping the constituency’s political future.

“The youth must not sit back and complain. They must take responsibility by acquiring voter cards and turning out in large numbers during the election,” he said.

“If you want change, you must be part of the process that brings that change.”

He pledged to restore what he termed as the constituency’s “lost glory,” arguing that Nyaribari Chache had previously stood out in development and service delivery.

“We have the resources, we have the people, but we need leadership that is focused, accountable, and inclusive,” he added.

Dr Mogendi criticised the current leadership, claiming that sectors such as infrastructure, youth empowerment and public services have lagged behind. He pointed to poor road networks as a major barrier to economic growth, access to healthcare and education.

“Our farmers are struggling to transport their produce to markets, and students face daily challenges getting to school. This must change,” he said, promising to prioritise road rehabilitation if elected.

However, Dr Mogendi is expected to battle it out with Tongi for the Jubilee Party ticket, setting up a potential nomination showdown.

On his part, Tongi has intensified his campaigns across the constituency, banking on his development record during his previous tenure in Parliament.

“My record is clear. The people of Nyaribari Chache know what I have done before, and I am ready to build on that foundation,” he said in a recent address.

The entry of multiple contenders sets the stage for a competitive race against Jhanda, a close ally of William Ruto, who is expected to defend his seat on the basis of his development agenda.
