Overall, Ward’s total career earnings are estimated between $25 million and $30 million. After retiring, he transitioned into broadcasting as an analyst for ESPN and also appeared as an actor in the Creed boxing film franchise.

    Early Life

Andre Ward was born on February 23, 1984, in San Francisco, California. His mother, Madeline, is African American, while his father, Frank, is of Irish descent.

Ward began boxing at the age of nine when his father took him to a gym in Hayward. Because both of his parents struggled with substance abuse, Ward eventually came under the guardianship of his godfather Virgil Hunter, who also became his longtime trainer and mentor.

    Amateur Boxing Career

Ward built an outstanding amateur record of 115 wins and only 5 losses before entering the professional ranks. Along the way, he won several major amateur titles, including:

    • U.S. Amateur Middleweight Champion (2001)
    • Under-19 National Champion (2002)
    • U.S. Amateur Light Heavyweight Champion (2003)

His greatest amateur achievement came at the 2004 Athens Olympics, where he captured the light-heavyweight gold medal, solidifying his reputation as one of America’s top boxing prospects.

    Professional Boxing Career

Ward turned professional in 2004, making his debut with a second-round TKO victory over Chris Molina. He quickly gained attention for his disciplined defense and strategic fighting style.

By 2008, Ward captured the WBO-NABO super-middleweight title after defeating Jerson Ravelo. The following year, he continued his rise by winning the NABF super-middleweight title against Henry Buchanan.

His major breakthrough came during the Super Six World Boxing Classic, where he defeated Danish champion Mikkel Kessler to claim the WBA (Super) super-middleweight title.

    • Allan Green
    • Sakio Bika
    • Arthur Abraham

In 2011, Ward defeated Carl Froch in the Super Six final. The victory unified multiple titles and added the WBC and The Ring super-middleweight championships to his collection.

He successfully defended his belts in 2012 by defeating Chad Dawson.

    Move to Light Heavyweight

After a brief hiatus due to injuries and promotional disputes, Ward returned in 2015 and later moved up to the light-heavyweight division.

In 2016, he defeated Sullivan Barrera and Alexander Brand before facing Sergey Kovalev for the unified light-heavyweight titles.

Ward defeated Kovalev twice—first by controversial unanimous decision in 2016, then by TKO in their 2017 rematch—capturing the WBA (Super), IBF, and WBO light-heavyweight titles.

Three months after the rematch, Ward announced his retirement at age 33, finishing with an undefeated record of 32 wins.

In 2021, he was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.

    Personal Life

Andre Ward is married to his high school sweetheart, Tiffiney Ward. The couple has four children together: Malachi, Andre Jr., Amira, and Micah.
