Andrei Igorevich Svechnikov is a Russian professional ice hockey player who plays as a winger for the Carolina Hurricanes of the National Hockey League (NHL).
Born on March 26, 2000, in Barnaul, Altai Krai, Russia, he stands 6 feet 2–3 inches tall and weighs around 200 pounds.
Drafted second overall by the Hurricanes in the 2018 NHL Entry Draft, Svechnikov is known for his size, speed, physicality, and highlight-reel goals, including pioneering lacrosse-style (“Michigan”) goals in the NHL.
He became the first player born in the 2000s to score an NHL goal shortly after his debut.
Svechnikov comes from a hockey-dedicated family that made significant sacrifices to support their sons’ careers.
His parents, Igor and Elena, relocated multiple times, with Elena working multiple jobs and moving with Andrei to North America during his junior years.
Siblings
Andrei has one older brother, Evgeny Svechnikov, who is also a professional hockey player.
Evgeny was drafted 19th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft and has played in the NHL and AHL.
The brothers share an exceptionally close bond, having grown up sharing nearly everything, from meals to living spaces, and pushing each other in hockey from a young age.

He then joined the Barrie Colts of the OHL for the 2017–18 season, dominating as a rookie with 72 points in just 44 games and winning the Emms Family Award as OHL Rookie of the Year.
After being selected second overall in 2018, Svechnikov made the Hurricanes roster immediately.
He scored his first NHL goal on October 7, 2018, against the New York Rangers.
In his sophomore season (2019–20), he recorded a career-high 61 points and scored the first lacrosse-style goal in NHL history.
He has since become a cornerstone forward for Carolina, signing an eight-year, $62 million extension in 2021.
