Another landslide has been reported in Kipkenda Village, Kibendo, Emsoo Ward in Keiyo North, Elgeyo Marakwet County.

Government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura confirmed the incident on Monday and said rescue efforts are currently underway.

“The government regrets to report that another landslide has taken place in Kipkenda Village, Kibendo, Emsoo Ward, Keiyo North, Elgeyo Marakwet County. Rescue efforts are ongoing by multi-agency teams. More updates to follow,” Mwaura said.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen said the ongoing heavy rains across parts of the country have increased the risk of landslides, especially in the Kerio Valley region. He said a rockfall in the area earlier on Monday claimed two lives and injured three others.

“I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the deceased and wish a quick recovery to those who were injured,” Murkomen said.

He thanked the Elgeyo Marakwet County Government and the Kenya Red Cross for responding quickly to the emergency and urged residents to remain alert.

“We continue to call on residents in the region to be aware of their surroundings and to report any signs of earth movement to local authorities,” he added.

On Sunday, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) closed the Kapyego–Chesoi–Kilangata Road after heavy rainfall triggered landslides in several areas. The worst-hit locations include Kilangata, Murkutwo, Chesongoch, and Kabetwa.

KeNHA reported that mudslides in Chesongoch led to the deaths of at least 22 people. A rescue and recovery operation led by the Ministry of Interior is ongoing.

The authority also said a key crossing along the Biretwo–Arror Road was washed away, cutting off the road by nearly 40 metres. Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes and reschedule travel for safety.

Meanwhile, the government has delivered food and emergency supplies to families affected by the disaster. Murkomen, who is coordinating the response on the ground, said the aid was airlifted because of the difficult terrain.

The supplies include 600 bags of rice, 520 bags of beans, 1,000 blankets, 300 mattresses, 30 boxes of soap, and 10 bales of sanitary towels. The county government is also developing a system to guide well-wishers who wish to donate.

By Saturday evening, 21 people had been confirmed dead and more than 30 others were reported missing. At least 25 survivors have been rescued and taken to hospital.
