The Nairobi county Secretary Peter Kariuki has been arrested under unclear circumstances. He was arrested at the county offices by police. He was taken to the Milimani Law courts and later presented before Justice Chacha Mwita. It is still unclear what charges he was arrested for. The Equity bank of Kenya CEO James Mwangi has told Kenyans that they should warm up to the 16% tax levy on fuel so as to secure a better future. He termed the increase in tax as the cost of transformation. Lawyer and activists Okiya Omtatah has filed a case challenging the 16 per cent Value Added Tax (VAT) levied on fuel which has increased the cost of fuel. The activist has termed the increase that took effect on September 1 after a three year postponement as unlawful and irregular. He said that the increase contravenes the constitution and has caused the cost of basic goods to rapidly increase. The Director of Public Prosecution Noordin Haji has asked for an apology from the Nation Media Group after they posted a story claiming that he said that he would bring down the high and mighty through graft charges. In the article published on the Nation Media’s digital platform the author claimed that they had a telephone conversation with the DPP Haji who uttered those words. Police seized 88 bags of illegal sugar in Busia town on Sunday morning. The sugar was being smuggled into the country through the Kenya Uganda Border. The illegal sugar, estimated to be worth at least KSh1.5 million, was packaged into 50kg bags and was being dispatched to different parts of the country. The treasury’s CS said that the 16% fuel would be be implemented because that was the law. Members of parliament had postponed the fuel tax for two years after a public outcry that a rise in fuel would amount to an increase of basic commodities. Deputy Chief Justice Philomena Mwilu’s name has this week been dragged in the mud after her arrest. She becomes the first high ranking judge to be charged with corruption after the presidential petition of 2017. Chief Magistrate Lawrence Mugambi has ruled that the proceedings against Deputy Chief Justice (DCJ) Philomena Mwilu shall rest at the point at which they had reached. The court also ruled that two weeks before the hearing at the high court on October 9, there shall be a mention at the chief magistrates court to update the court on the directions of the High court.
