University of Nairobi (UoN) will reopen on November 6 after its indefinite closure due to insecurity and student unrest in October. The students protested against the arrest of former student leader, and now Embakasi East MP, Babu Owino. Owino was arrested and charged with incitement to violence and subversion. At least 27 students were injured during the demonstrations. Safaricom on Friday announced a 9.5% increase in net profit for the six months ended September 30. The telecommunications company recorded a Sh26.2 billion net profit. According to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), Sateesh Kamath, the increase can be attributed to the great performance in mobile money, MPesa and data. Mr Kamath, sitting in for the CEO, Bob Collymore who is on sick leave said that voice calls remained strong, growing from Sh45.7 to Sh47.35 billion. Nairobi County Governor, Mike Sonko on Thursday paid hospital bills for six people hospitalized in St Joseph Omboo Mission Hospital, Migori after NASA protests against the October 26 repeat presidential elections. Two Nairobi city council officials were on Thursday sent on compulsory leave for allegedly trying to sabotage Governor Mike Sonko’s government. Leboo ole Morintat, acting county secretary said that the two; Albert Kipkoech and Chrispine Caleb allowed hawckers to block shops in Nairobi’s CBD. Microsoft East Africa has upped its female staffs maternity leave to 20 weeks of paid leave and six weeks for the fathers, which also applies to West and Central Africa offices. Former Kiambu Governor, William Kabogo on Wednesday lost land valued at Sh1.8 Billion that his company, Caroget Investments Limited acquired from the Nairobi City Council in 2003. The piece of land located in Nairobi’s Westlands is also owned by Aster Holdings which in 2010 filed documents in court claiming that it was the sole owner of the plot since 1993. The Election Observation Group (ELOG) on Wednesday said that it cannot tell whether the fresh presidential election held on 26 October was free, fair and credible. Speaking in Nairobi, the group’s chairperson, Regina Opondo noted that the lack of observers and party agents apart from those of the Jubilee party, may have jeopardized the repeat polls.
