Enzo Fernandez has admitted that the Chelsea FC dressing room is still struggling to come to terms with the mid-season departure of former head coach Enzo Maresca.

Speaking to Argentinian media, the midfielder said he does not fully understand the club’s decision to sack Maresca, particularly the timing, which came during a crucial phase of the 2025–26 season.

“I don’t understand it,” Fernandez said. “Sometimes as players there are things we don’t understand and the way they try to manage things. I don’t have an answer because I don’t know.”

Maresca was dismissed shortly after a draw with Bournemouth, a move that reportedly left the squad unsettled. His exit came amid speculation linking him with a possible move to succeed Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

Fernandez said the team had built a strong identity under the Italian coach, adding that the sudden change disrupted progress.

“His departure hurt a lot because we had identity. He gave us order in training and matches,” he said. “When it happens in the middle of the season, it cuts everything short.”

The Argentine international also acknowledged that adapting to new manager Liam Rosenior has not been easy for the squad.

Chelsea’s struggles have been highlighted by a heavy 8-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League, a result that exposed deeper issues within the team.

Despite being under contract until 2032, Fernandez has been linked with a possible move away from Stamford Bridge. Reports suggest interest from top European clubs, including Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

When asked about his future, the midfielder remained non-committal.

“I don’t know. There are eight games left and the FA Cup. There’s the World Cup and then we’ll see,” he said.
