A US appeals court has ruled that most tariffs issued by US President Donald Trump are illegal, setting up a potential legal showdown that could upend his foreign policy agenda. The ruling affects Trump’s “reciprocal” tariffs, imposed on most countries around the world, as well as other tariffs slapped on China, Mexico and Canada. In a 7-4 decision, the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit rejected Trump’s argument that the tariffs were permitted under an emergency economic powers act, calling them “invalid as contrary to law”. The ruling will not take effect until 14 October to give the…

A boat carrying migrants capsized off the coast of Mauritania earlier this week, killing 69 people, officials told AFP Friday, the latest deadly sea crossing on the frequent migration path. Thousands of would-be migrants have died in recent years seeking to make the sea trip from Africa to Spain and other European countries. The accident occurred late on Tuesday night when the migrants on the boat saw the lights of a town off the coast of Mauritania, some 80 kilometres (50 miles) north of the capital Nouakchott and “moved to one side, causing it to capsize”, a senior coastguard official…
Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, plans to announce that she will not run for re-election next year, according to a person familiar with her decision. The move, first reported by CBS News, would open up another potentially competitive race in Iowa, months after GOP Gov. Kim Reynolds announced she wouldn’t run for re-election either. But while Democrats have been eyeing underdog bids in both races, they’ve struggled in recent statewide elections and haven’t won a Senate race in the state since 2008. Another person familiar with the discussions said Ernst and her team had been wrestling with the decision for months.…
Elon Musk is seeking to dismiss a lawsuit by US regulators alleging he wrongly saved money by revealing he increased his initial investment in Twitter too late. The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) said in a January complaint that Musk failed to disclose that he had built up his stake in the company within the regulator’s timeframe. It said this had allowed him to save about $150m (£123m) by purchasing shares in Twitter – which he bought outright months later and renamed X – at “artificially low prices”. Musk’s lawyers, filing shortly before the court’s deadline for his response,…
President Donald Trump has cancelled Secret Service protection which had been arranged for Kamala Harris by Joe Biden before he left office, according to one of her advisers. As a former vice-president, Ms Harris was entitled under law to receive six months of this extra security after leaving office in January, which was due to expire in July. Her protection had been extended for another year by an executive directive signed by her former boss but this was revoked by Trump in a memo, seen by the BBC, which is dated Thursday. The move comes just weeks before Harris embarks…
US consumers kept spending in July, even as inflation remained elevated that month, new data showed Friday. Consumer spending rose 0.5% from June, according to Commerce Department data released Friday. That’s slightly below expectations for a 0.6% bump but represented a slight pickup from the 0.4% increase notched in June, according to FactSet consensus estimates. July is typically a month filled with summer sales events, notably Amazon’s Prime Day, as well as a key month for back-to-school spending. However, spending on cars and financial services (bolstered by the strong stock market performance) drove the lion’s share of last month’s spending…

UK leaders have become more outspoken against Israel’s conduct in Gaza,…
