A police officer assigned to the elite presidential bodyguard team has taken his own life at his home in Juja, Kiambu county. Constable Samuel Ngatia, a member of Deputy President William Ruto’s security squad, died on Monday morning after shooting himself in the head. Two lawyers, Felix Kiprono and Vincent Yegon have filed a suit to challenge the ban on the phrase “hatupangwingwi” by the NCIC. Last week, NCIC through a presser released a list of 19 words that the commission labeled as hate speech. The list contains commonly used words such as ‘hatupangwingwi’ and ‘kama noma noma’. Also on the list is the ‘madoa doa’ phrase linked to the 2007/08 post-election violence that left more than 1,100 people dead and 600,000 others displaced. Casual laborers on a farm linked to Deputy President William Ruto in Mata village, Taita Taveta County, went on strike to protest non-payment of their wages, paralyzing operations. Workers staged a protest at the Kisima farm’s gate on Monday, claiming they had not received their wages in the last six weeks. According to the Nation, the workers claimed the farm managers had been selling empty promises.
