Amanda Peet Opens Up About Breast Cancer Diagnosis During Family Losses

Actress Amanda Peet has shared the emotional journey behind her breast cancer diagnosis last fall, revealing that it came amid an already challenging period in her life.

In a personal essay for The New Yorker published Saturday, the Your Friends and Neighbors star wrote that she had long been told her breasts were “dense” and “busy,” a medical warning requiring extra monitoring rather than a compliment. “I had been seeing a breast surgeon every six months for checkups. The Friday before Labor Day, I went for what I thought would be a routine scan,” Peet recalled.

Her routine checkup quickly turned serious after a doctor noticed something concerning on an ultrasound and recommended a biopsy. “After the procedure, she said that she would walk the sample over to Cedars-Sinai and hand-deliver it to Pathology. That’s when I knew,” Peet explained, noting that the results came the next day.

She was diagnosed with stage I breast cancer, specifically hormone-receptor-positive and HER2-negative. While the tumor appeared small, she still needed an MRI to determine the full extent of the disease.

Adding to her emotional strain, Peet’s “long divorced” parents were both in hospice care on opposite coasts. Her mother had been in hospice since June, while her father had only recently entered care. She recounted flying to New York and missing her father’s final moments but being able to see his body before it was taken from his apartment.

Peet, who married Game of Thrones creator David Benioff in 2006 and has three children with him, described a mix of relief and anxiety upon returning to Los Angeles. “I was happier than I’d been pre-diagnosis, when I was just a regular person who didn’t have cancer,” she wrote. But the looming MRI and follow-up tests quickly brought her back to fear, as she realized that cancer diagnoses “come in a slow drip.”

Doctors later discovered another benign mass in her breast.
