Airtel Kenya has been hit with a Sh 2 billion frequency spectrum renewal fee demand adding to the companies current financial woes. The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) claimed that Airtel’s operating license had expired January 27, 2015 and only renewable if they pay the $20.25 million (Sh2.06 billion) fee. This follows a lawsuit by the mobile network company in August, claiming the CA had agreed to combine its license with those it had bought from moribund Yu Mobile in 2014 for $6.976 million (Sh718 million) and that the regulator changed their stance by asking for Sh2.06 billion for frequency spectrum. The World Bank recently conducted a survey to establish the root cause of the high levels of unemployment within Sub-Saharan Africa. While conducting their survey they were quick to highlight the correlation between university education and labour market needs as the reason behind unemployment. “TVET and higher education often have poor links to labour demand, lack diverse pathways that can allow students to build skills cumulatively, and have financing and accountability mechanisms that are not tied to results,” the bank said in its Pulse report released Wednesday. Kenya Airways (KQ) has been named Africa’s leading airline for the second year in a row at the 24th Annual World Travel Awards in Kigali, Rwanda on Tuesday. Jetway Airlines is expected to launch scheduled flights between Nairobi and the Maasai Mara from December 1. According to Caroline Kiptoo, the airline’s sales and marketing manager, the airline will offer daily scheduled flights from Wilson Airport to Maasai Mara National Reserve. As a result flights at airstrips like Keekorok, Mara North, Serena, and Kichwa Tembo will be cancelled indefinitely. This years Nobel Economics Prize has been given to America’s Richard Thaler for his work in behavioral economics according to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. “In total, Richard Thaler’s contributions have built a bridge between the economic and psychological analyses of individual decision-making,” the award-giving body said on announcing the 9 million Swedish crown ($1.1 million) prize.
