A United States court on Friday sentenced Baktash Akasha to 25 years in prison. Baktash Akasha and his brother Ibrahim Akasha pleaded guilty to six counts of drug trafficking charges in October 2018. While handing the sentence, presiding Judge Victor Marrero said he would not impose the maximum term of life imprisonment sought by prosecutors. This, he said, is due to mitigating factors that Baktash’s defense attorney had outlined in a presentation during Friday’s 75-minute court session. The government has declared Monday, August 26 a public holiday to allow maximum enumeration of Kenyans during the 2019 Census exercise. According to a statement from the Presidential Strategic Communication Unit (PSCU), President Uhuru Kenyatta made the announcement on Friday when he launched the countdown to the 2019 Kenya Population and Housing Census at the Kenyatta National Convention Centre (KICC). Turkana Governor Josphat Nanok on Friday accused Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party of unfairly stripping him of Vice-chair role. 14 people have been arrested for allegedly polluting the environment by burning old tyres in Nairobi’s Donholm area. The operation was conducted by officers from the Nairobi County government and National Environmental Management Authority (Nema) on Friday. According to Nairobi County acting Environment director Lawrence Mwangi, the suspects have been burning the tyres to extract wires which they later sell. “We have received numerous complaints from Buruburu and Donholm residents over air pollution at night. Police are holding two Chinese nationals who were arrested on Friday for running an illegal chang’aa distillery in Athi River. Area OCPD Samuel Mkuusi confirmed the incident saying the two, Wang Yalan and Wang Haijian, ran the plant in a house at Green Park estate. According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), over 800 litres of methanol and 3000 litres of chang’aa and busaa were seized during the incident. Two rugby players, Frank Wanyama and Alex Olaba Mahaga, who were last week found guilty of sexual harassment have been sentenced to 15 years in prison. The players were accused by singer Wendy Kemunto of repeatedly sexually abusing her in their Seefar Apartment on February 10, 2018. President Uhuru Kenyatta has declared that the government will not subject grade six pupils to national examinations before they are allowed to proceed to secondary school. This is to ensure 100 per cent transition to secondary school. “Grade 7,8,9 should be domiciled in our secondary schools. 446 bags of counterfeit sugar were on Thursday night confiscated in Nairobi’s Kayole area by detectives from the Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA). According to the DCI, the sugar, found in a retailer shop identified by police as Ventures Green Store, was packed in 50-kilogram bags. “The sugar which is believed to be from the Western Region was indicated NOT FOR SALE. At least five Members of Parliament were recently denied United States Visas when they sought to travel as part of Kenyan delegation that was to attend the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) in Nashville, Tennessee. A Nairobi court on Thursday extended orders barring the government from detaining all movable assets of embattled Thika billionaire Humprey Kariuki over tax row. In the ruling, Nairobi Chief Magistrate Caroline Nzibe further barred the state from detaining assets attached to African spirits and WoW beverages Limited pending the hearing of the case. According to reports, some of the billionaire’s assets that have been grounded include his planes, ships and other immovable property. A postmortem examination carried on the body of a 35-year-old man who passed on during a sex escapade at a maize plantation in Uasin Gishu County has revealed that the man died as a result of chocking. The autopsy report, which was released at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, indicates that the Kapsaret constituency resident, Julius Bor, was highly intoxicated at the time of his death.
