Antwan André Patton, professionally known as Big Boi, is an acclaimed American rapper, record producer, songwriter, and actor.

Born on February 1, 1975, in Savannah, Georgia, he rose to prominence as one half of the influential Southern hip-hop duo OutKast, alongside André 3000.

Patton spent much of his early childhood in Savannah before relocating to Atlanta to live with his aunt, where he attended Tri-Cities High School and met his future collaborator.

His grandmother played a key role in sparking his love for music by sending him and his siblings to purchase 45 records, exposing him to a variety of sounds that would later shape his eclectic style.

Their debut album, Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik (1994), introduced their innovative sound, followed by critically acclaimed releases like ATLiens (1996), Aquemini (1998), and Stankonia (2000).

The 2003 double album Speakerboxxx/The Love Below marked a pinnacle, with Big Boi’s Speakerboxxx side featuring the chart-topping single “The Way You Move.”

OutKast’s boundary-pushing creativity earned them widespread influence, selling over 25 million albums worldwide.

After the duo’s hiatus in 2007, Big Boi pursued a solo path, signing with Def Jam Recordings.

His debut solo album, Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty (2010), received strong reviews and commercial success, peaking at number three on the Billboard 200.

Subsequent releases, including Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors (2012) and Boomiverse (2017), showcased his continued evolution as an artist, blending funk, hip-hop, and experimental elements.

Beyond music, he has acted in films and remained active in philanthropy and mentorship within the industry.

    Accolades

Throughout his illustrious career, Big Boi has amassed significant accolades.

As a member of OutKast, he contributed to six Grammy Awards for the group, including the historic Album of the Year win for Speakerboxxx/The Love Below—making them the first hip-hop act to achieve this honor.

He has received additional Grammy nominations for his solo work, such as in categories like Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group.

In 2025, OutKast was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, cementing their legacy.

Other honors include the City of East Point, Georgia’s Global Icon Award and Key to the City in 2021, recognizing his contributions to music and his hometown roots.
