Bill Cassidy is an American politician and physician serving as the senior United States Senator from Louisiana since 2015.

Born William Morgan Cassidy on September 28, 1957, in Highland Park, Illinois, he is one of four sons of Elizabeth and James F. Cassidy, of Irish and Welsh descent.

He moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, as an infant and grew up there, later earning a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from Louisiana State University (LSU) in 1979 and a Doctor of Medicine from the LSU School of Medicine in 1983.

He practiced as a gastroenterologist specializing in liver disease for over three decades, including teaching at LSU’s School of Medicine and co-founding the Greater Baton Rouge Community Clinic to provide free care to the uninsured.

He is married to Dr. Laura Cassidy, a retired general surgeon specializing in breast cancer, and they have three children and one grandchild.

After completing his medical training, including an internship, residency, and fellowship at the University of Southern California Medical Center, he returned to Louisiana in 1990 to join the faculty at LSU School of Medicine, where he taught and treated patients at Earl K. Long Hospital, dedicated to serving the uninsured.

He provided emergency medical care following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Transitioning to politics, he was elected to the Louisiana State Senate in 2006, serving until 2008.

He then won a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives for Louisiana’s 6th Congressional District in 2008, holding it until 2015.

In 2014, he defeated incumbent Senator Mary Landrieu to become the first Republican to hold Louisiana’s Class 2 Senate seat since 1883.

Reelected in 2020, Cassidy has focused on health care reform, coastal restoration, mental health, and disaster recovery.

He chairs the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee as of 2025—the first physician in that role since 1933—and serves on the Finance, Energy and Natural Resources, and Veterans Affairs committees.

    Accolades

Cassidy was inducted into the LSU Alumni Hall of Distinction in 2025 for his exemplary service and impact.

Other honors include the Grammys on the Hill Award from the Recording Academy, the Fiscal Hero Award from the Campaign to Fix the Debt, and the Guardian of Small Business Award from the National Federation of Independent Business.

In his Senate tenure, he has advanced major legislation, such as the Social Security Fairness Act (repealing the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset), the Maternal and Child Health Stillbirth Prevention Act, and provisions in broader acts like the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which secured billions for Louisiana projects.
