Kahawa Tungu has learned that the exit follows Safaricom’s decision to refuse to renew Collymore’s contract with the board pushing for a new CEO as Bob Collymore’s time continues to be occupied with treatment.
Currently, Safaricom Chief Customer Officer Sylvia Mulinge represents the CEO in most events while she is also fighting accusations of being the face of corruption and unethical practices at the leading telecommunication company.
Sylvia faces accusations of corruptly awarding the youth activation business to Saracen after poaching Transcend Media staff who left with the original pitch of the company. The accusations saw Safaricom and Transcend Media engage in legal battles for long until they were reportedly paid to keep quiet in an out of court settlement.
As part of the “keep quiet” deal, Safaricom also reached out to Raila Odinga whose son they awarded a lucrative media contract which is still ongoing.

According to reports by Reuters, the company is facing hurdles by the government over succession issues, with the Kenyan government insisting that the next CEO should be Kenyan.
Current Chief Customer Officer Sylvia Mulinge is still widely considered inexperienced and immature to lead the telco.
Collymore was appointed as Safaricom CEO in 2010, and his reign has been marred with fights against competitor networks like Airtel and Telcom, who have been demanding that Safaricom is declared dominant player.

From 1993, Collymore worked in various positions in the telecommunications industry in the UK, including Cellnet, Dixons Retail and Vodafone UK.
In 2003 he moved to Japan to manage the integration of J-Phone into the Vodafone Group. In 2006 he became the governance director for Africa at Vodafone and subsidiary Safaricom.
While Bob Collymore is currently married to Wambui Kamiru, he has been romantically involved with other Safaricom staff including the head of enterprise business, Rita Okuthe among others.
