Last week it was revealed that tens of thousands of Twitter users have bought followers. The services exchanging followers for cash give their clients nothing but bots. So when you buy “followers”, you are probably buying just fake fans. Which might not help you in any meaningful way except inflate the number of your followers making you look credible.

Fake followers go for as little as $9 for 1000 followers. Apart from the fake followers, many of us have Twitter followers whose accounts are dormant. They have not logged in for a very long time and so they do not add value to us. They are categorized as “inactive”. So we are going to use this Status People app to check on who among the top 10 tweeps in Kenya have the most fake followers.

    See below

Handle Total Followers Fake Inactive Good
    KTNKenya 105,989 36% 49% 15%
    NTVKenya 101431 33% 45% 22%
    KoinangJeff 101,342 31% 47% 22%
    CitizenTVKenya 99,802 38% 43% 19%
    Majani_ 91,341 0% 4% 96%
    MarthaKarua 90,595 45% 42% 13%
    RailaOdinga 72,174 33% 48% 19%
    UKenyatta 64,798 41% 44% 15%
    WMutunga 69,489 31% 48% 21%
    Mwalimuchurchil 61,962 16% 53% 31%
    LarryMadowo 36,798 9% 50% 41%
    Alykhansatchu 24,344 6% 51% 43%
    WhiteAfrican 24,226 7% 35% 58%
    MohaJichoPevu 24,539 9% 47% 44%

And mine are at 5% fake, 38% inactive and 57% very active. These figures match with influence scores measured on Klout and KredLy. I was consulting for a senior CEO in a company. She was looking for engagement on social media. She thought that the higher the number of followers, the higher the influence. This is not always the case.

Take the example of DiaperKids who are always very influential among KOTs but they don’t have so many followers.
