Police are investigating an incident where a two year old boy drowned in a pit full of water as he played at a neighbour’s compound in Cherengany, Trans Nzoia County.

The boy was playing with his friends at the neighbour’s compound when he slipped into an open pit that had water.

He was removed and rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

His parents said he had left with his friends to the neighbour’s compound when they heard screams that he had drowned in the open pit.

Police said the incident happened on April 4 in the evening.

Police visited the scene and announced investigations were ongoing.

The body was moved to the mortuary pending autopsy and other investigations.

In Gatanga, Muranga County, a body was found floating in a pond after suspected drowning and suicide.

Police officers visited the scene and established that Lucy Wambui, 24 had jumped into the water in a suicide mission.

A pair of red slippers and a cap were found on the banks of the water pond.

She was last seen at Kaguku shopping center where she used to work as a casual labourer at a local hotel, police said.

A suicide note was found at the scene as the body was moved to Thika General Kago mortuary awaiting postmortem.

Cases of suicide have been on the rise amid efforts to address the trend.

Police say the trend has been worrying and increasing as up to two cases are reported daily.

The World Health Organisation says such cases are attributed to joblessness, death, academic failures or pressures, legal difficulties and financial difficulties.

Other reasons are bullying, previous suicide attempts, history of suicide in a family, alcoholism and substance misuse, depression and bipolar disorder.
