Brandi Marie Carlile, born on June 1, 1981, in Ravensdale, Washington, is an American singer-songwriter and producer.

Raised in a rural, isolated community 30 miles outside Seattle, Carlile grew up in a modest household, often moving between towns like Black Diamond, Maple Valley, Auburn, Sumner, and West Seattle.

Her early life was marked by a close connection to music, fostered by her mother, Teresa Carlile, a country singer.

At age four, Carlile survived a life-threatening bout of bacterial meningitis, which left her in a coma and required extensive recovery.

By age eight, she was performing on stage, singing Johnny Cash’s “Tennessee Flat Top Box” alongside her mother, and by 15, she was writing her own songs.

Carlile’s passion for music led her to drop out of Tahoma High School to pursue it full-time, teaching herself piano and guitar while performing in Seattle’s music scene.

Siblings

Brandi is the eldest of three siblings, sharing a close bond with her brother, Jay Carlile, and sister, Tiffany Carlile, both of whom were introduced to music at a young age by their mother.

Jay, born just 11 months and 27 days after Brandi, is often described as her Irish twin, a term for siblings born within a year of each other.

In her memoir, Broken Horses, Carlile portrays Jay as a charismatic, blond, blue-eyed figure with a flair for drama, noting their frequent childhood conflicts but also their deep connection through music.

Jay has largely stayed out of the public eye but has joined Brandi and their father for stage performances, including a national tour in 2023 where they shared the stage with their aunt, Brandi.

Tiffany, born in 1987, is the youngest sibling and also pursued music, though she too maintains a lower profile.

She married Phil Hanseroth, one of Brandi’s bandmates, in 2011, and the couple has two children.

Career

Carlile’s career began in Seattle’s music clubs, where she performed alongside twin brothers Tim and Phil Hanseroth, who became her core bandmates.

Their collaboration started in 1999 after meeting through producer Rick Parashar, and the trio formed the Brandi Carlile Band after the Hanseroths’ rock band, The Fighting Machinists, disbanded.

Signed by Columbia Records in 2004 based on her home-recorded demos, Carlile released her self-titled debut album in 2005, earning critical acclaim and a spot on Rolling Stone’s “10 Artists to Watch” list.

Her 2007 album, The Story, produced by T Bone Burnett, marked her breakthrough, with the title track gaining widespread recognition through its use in General Motors commercials and TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy.

Subsequent albums, including Give Up the Ghost (2009), Bear Creek (2012), The Firewatcher’s Daughter (2015), By the Way, I Forgive You (2018), and In These Silent Days (2021), showcased her versatility and emotional depth.

She blended raw intensity with orchestral elegance in live performances, such as her 2010 Live at Benaroya Hall with the Seattle Symphony.

Carlile’s songwriting extends to collaborations with artists like Tanya Tucker, The Highwomen (an all-female country supergroup), and covers by Adele and Dolly Parton.

She also founded the Looking Out Foundation to support causes like racial justice and LGBTQ rights.

Her 2021 memoir, Broken Horses, became a New York Times bestseller.

Accolades

Carlile has won eleven Grammy Awards, including three for her work on Tanya Tucker’s While I’m Livin’ (2019) and six at the 61st Grammy Awards in 2019.

She was the most-nominated female artist that year for By the Way, I Forgive You, earning nods for Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year for “The Joke.”

Her Grammy wins span categories like Best American Roots Song, Best Country Song, and Best Rock Song, showcasing her genre-defying talent.

Carlile has also received two Emmy Awards and an Academy Award nomination, cementing her influence across entertainment.

Her albums have charted impressively, with By the Way, I Forgive You reaching No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and topping the Top Rock Albums chart.

The Firewatcher’s Daughter hit No. 1 on the Billboard Folk Albums chart.
