Brodie Allan Retallick is a New Zealand professional rugby union player who plays as a lock.
Born on 31 May 1991 in Rangiora, New Zealand, he grew up in Amberley in North Canterbury and attended Christchurch Boys’ High School.
He is known for his powerful presence in the second row combined with strong ball skills, work rate, and lineout ability.
He currently plays for Kobelco Kobe Steelers in Japan Rugby League One.
He previously represented Hawke’s Bay in New Zealand’s provincial competition and the Chiefs in Super Rugby, and he earned 109 Test caps for the All Blacks between 2012 and 2023.
Siblings
Brodie’s older brother is Brooke Retallick, who has played as an out-half or first-five for teams including the Canterbury Bs.
His younger brother is Logan Retallick, who has played rugby for Amberley.
Both brothers have competed at club and provincial levels in New Zealand.
The family has a strong rugby background: their father Glenn (or Glen) played club rugby as a prop, their mother is Jo, and their maternal uncle John Ashworth earned 24 Test caps as a prop for the All Blacks between 1978 and 1985.

Career
Retallick began his senior career with Hawke’s Bay in the ITM Cup, making appearances in 2010 and 2011.
He represented New Zealand Under-20 at the 2011 IRB Junior World Championship, which the side won.
He joined the Chiefs for Super Rugby in 2012 and went on to play 128 games for the franchise across two stints (2012–2019 and 2022–2023), contributing to Super Rugby titles in 2012 and 2013.
He made his All Blacks debut against Ireland on 9 June 2012 and became a regular starter, forming a highly successful lock partnership with Sam Whitelock.
He featured in the 2015, 2019, and 2023 Rugby World Cups, helping New Zealand win the tournament in 2015.
After a period with Kobelco Kobe Steelers in Japan (2020–2021), he returned to the Chiefs and All Blacks before rejoining the Japanese club more permanently after the 2023 World Cup, where he has continued to play and contribute to team success, including a Japan Rugby League One title.
He retired from international rugby after the 2023 World Cup final, having scored nine Test tries for 45 points.
Accolades
Retallick was named World Rugby Player of the Year in 2014, becoming the youngest winner of the award at the time, and also received the New Zealand Rugby Player of the Year honour that same year.
He was part of the All Blacks side that won the 2015 Rugby World Cup and finished as runner-up in 2023 (with a third-place finish in 2019).
With New Zealand he secured multiple Rugby Championship titles, Bledisloe Cups, and other international trophies.
At Super Rugby level he won titles with the Chiefs in 2012 and 2013.
He earned the IRP Try of the Year award in 2018 and has been recognised in polls as one of the greatest All Black locks alongside Colin Meads.
