The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) has called for a thorough investigation into the mysterious deaths of two Catholic priests, saying the incidents have left the church and faithful deeply disturbed.

In a statement dated May 28, 2025, KCCB Chairperson Archbishop Maurice Muhatia Makumba expressed shock and sadness over the deaths of Fr. James Maina and Fr. Aloise Bett. He said the circumstances surrounding the two cases pointed to possible foul play.

“We are greatly disturbed that both deaths come with veiled malicious intent and mystery. We strongly condemn the killing of these ministers of God and the growing sense of insecurity this creates, especially for those serving in remote areas,” said Archbishop Makumba.

Fr. James Maina is reported to have died while receiving treatment, in what the bishops believe may have been a case of kidnapping and poisoning. “This strongly suggests murder,” the statement read.

Fr. Aloise Bett, on the other hand, was reportedly shot dead by unknown attackers after leaving a church service. “How can it be that security cannot be guaranteed for those serving faithfully in remote regions?” the bishops questioned. “Who is behind such a well-planned and brutal killing?”

The bishops criticized what they termed as the increasing disregard for human life, warning that deaths and killings are now being treated casually, and at times used for political purposes.

“We demand a full and independent investigation into the deaths of Fr. Maina and Fr. Bett to uncover the real causes and motives. This is necessary not only for justice but to ensure the safety of our priests and all Kenyans,” said Archbishop Makumba.

The Church has urged the government and security agencies to act swiftly, saying the lives of those serving in religious and humanitarian roles must be protected.
