CCK has released its quarterly report which among other figures details that more than 25 million people in Kenya are connected to mobile telecommunications services. Again according to CCK, communications penetration is at over 25.7 Million representing 64.2% of the total population.
Pre-paid subscriptions stand at 99% of the total mobile subscriptions, with Safaricom and Telkom Kenya registering positive gains in new subscriptions as Airtel and YU recorded a decline in subscriptions. Mobile Money services subscribers declined from 17.4 Million to 17.3 million at the end of June 2011, with a total of Kshs 48billion deposits made through the service.
Some Kshs104billion was realized as revenue from mobile services in 2010, representing a 15.7 % increase over the previous year. In 2010, the Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) per month went down to Kshs348.94 from Kshs389 in 2009 mainly as a result of lower calling tariffs.
The total investment in mobile sub-sector in 2010 declined by 32.6% to stand at Kshs27 billion from Kshs40 billion reported in 2009. At the end of June 2011, more than 5,800 staff were employed in the mobile telecoms sector of which 35% were women.
Fixed telecoms sub-sector has continued to decline with the sector having a paltry 374,942 subscribers by June 2011. That represents almost 19% decline attributed to the trend of fixed-to-mobile substitution as well as high maintenance costs of the fixed line as a result of cable vandalism.
At the end of June 2011, Kenya had a total of 4.2 million Internet subscriptions, representing an increase of 37.5% compared to the same period in the previous year. The mobile data/internet subscriptions through GPRS/EDGE and 3G remained the most popular medium of access accounting for 98% of the total internet subscriptions.
Of this, Safaricom commands 90.85% of the internet subscriptions in Kenya as the other providers fight for the rest.
In the same period, the country had 12.5 million Internet users, representing a 60.1% increase over the same period the previous year. The number of broadband subscription grew by 550.3% from June 2010 to stand at 121,126 by the end of June 2011. At the end of the 4th Quarter, the data/internet market had a total of 7482 employees.
In the postal/courier subsector, there was a 17.2% decline in the number of mail sent at the end of the quarter relative to the same period last year. The number of courier items sent decreased to 407,488, representing a drop of 126% compared to the same period in the previous year.
