Nairobi residents and motorists have been warned to brace for significant traffic disruptions on Thursday, August 7, as Kenya prepares to host the latest round of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) matches. The city will see key roads closed and others partially blocked to facilitate the smooth movement of teams, fans, and officials to and from the stadiums.
In a public notice issued by Joseph Chirchir, the Officer Commanding Traffic in Nairobi County, several major routes will either be shut down or restricted. These measures will mostly affect areas near the Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani and Nyayo National Stadium where the matches are scheduled to take place.
Aerodrome Road will be completely closed from Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout. On Lang’ata Road, one side of the road will be inaccessible from Madaraka Roundabout to Lusaka Roundabout, while on Mombasa Road, traffic will be restricted on one side from Lusaka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout.
The Nairobi traffic department has stated that the closures are necessary to support the safe and efficient hosting of the high-profile tournament. Thousands of football fans, local and international dignitaries, and players are expected to attend, increasing the pressure on city roads.
To ease congestion, motorists using Mombasa Road are encouraged to consider Likoni–Enterprise Road at General Motors or take the Southern Bypass via Ole Sereni. Those traveling along Lang’ata Road can divert via Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road from the Mbagathi Roundabout. Drivers heading from the CBD to Thika, Ruiru, or Juja are advised to use Limuru Road or Kiambu Road to avoid the closures.
Public transport vehicles carrying fans to Kasarani Stadium should use Ruaraka–Baba Dogo Road and Ngomongo Road to access the Ngomongo Roundabout. Meanwhile, motorists traveling from Thika Road to the CBD are advised to opt for the Eastern Bypass, Limuru Road, or Kiambu Road. Police have cautioned all drivers to avoid Thika Road unless they are heading directly to the stadium.
These traffic adjustments are part of a larger logistical plan to ensure smooth operations during CHAN 2024. Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya had earlier assured the public that the government had taken all necessary measures to support mobility and safety during the games. Traffic marshals will be stationed at major junctions to manage the flow and direct motorists.
Two major fixtures are lined up for Thursday: Zambia will face Congo at 4:00 PM at Nyayo Stadium, followed by Kenya taking on Angola at 7:00 PM at Kasarani Stadium.
