    Early Life

Chester Charles Bennington was born on March 20, 1976, in Phoenix, Arizona. His mother was a nurse, and his father worked as a police detective specializing in child sexual abuse cases. Chester’s passion for music began early, influenced by bands like Depeche Mode and Stone Temple Pilots, whose music later shaped his vocal style.

Bennington faced significant challenges growing up. His parents divorced when he was 11, and he endured sexual abuse from an older friend between ages 7 and 13. The trauma, combined with family breakdown and persistent bullying at school, pushed him toward writing poetry and music as emotional outlets.

During his teenage years, Chester struggled with substance abuse, experimenting with marijuana, opium, cocaine, methamphetamine, LSD, and alcohol. At 17, he moved in with his mother, who attempted to rein in his drug use.

    Early Music Career

Bennington’s first recording experience came with the band Sean Dowdell and His Friends?, which released a three-track cassette in 1993. He later formed the band Grey Daze, releasing two albums:

    • Wake Me (1994)
    • …No Sun Today (1997)

Despite some local success, Bennington was frustrated by the lack of progress and considered quitting music altogether.

In 1998, A&R executive Jeff Blue invited him to audition for a Los Angeles band called Xero—a group that would soon become Linkin Park. Chester quit his job, moved his family to California, and impressed the group instantly. Even after joining, the band struggled to secure a record deal until Jeff Blue, now at Warner Bros., helped them get signed.

    Breakthrough With Linkin Park

Linkin Park released their groundbreaking debut album Hybrid Theory on October 24, 2000. Co-written by Bennington and bandmate Mike Shinoda, the album became a global phenomenon:

    • Certified Diamond in the U.S.
    • One of the best-selling albums of the 21st century
    • Launched hits like “In the End,” “Crawling,” and “One Step Closer”

Their follow-up albums further cemented their status:

    • Meteora (2003) – Debuted at #1 on Billboard 200
    • Minutes to Midnight (2007) – Also debuted at #1
    • A Thousand Suns (2010)
    • Living Things (2012)
    • The Hunting Party (2014)
    • One More Light (2017)

Linkin Park sold more than 70 million albums worldwide, won:

    • 2 Grammy Awards
    • 6 American Music Awards
    • 4 MTV Video Music Awards

Massive global tours and album sales played a major role in building Chester’s $30 million net worth.

    Other Musical Projects

In 2005, Chester formed his side project Dead by Sunrise, debuting live in 2008 and releasing the album Out of Ashes in 2009.

A lifelong fan of Stone Temple Pilots, Bennington was invited to join the band in 2013 after Scott Weiland’s departure. Their debut single with him, “Out of Time,” was released in May 2013. Chester left the group in 2015 due to commitments with Linkin Park but maintained strong ties with the band.

    Personal Life

Chester married Samantha Marie Olit in 1996, and the couple had a son before divorcing in 2005. He later married Talinda Ann Bentley, a former Playboy model, in 2006. The couple had three children together and endured a year-long cyberstalking ordeal before the perpetrator was arrested.

Chester publicly battled substance abuse throughout his life. He revealed in 2011 that he had stopped drinking. He also dealt with physical injuries during live performances, including broken bones.

Outside music, he was passionate about tattoos and frequently promoted Club Tattoo, owned by his longtime friend Sean Dowdell. He was also a devoted fan of Arizona sports teams, including the Suns, Cardinals, Diamondbacks, and Coyotes.

    Death

On July 20, 2017—his 41st birthday—Chester Bennington was found dead at a home in Palos Verdes Estates, Los Angeles. Authorities ruled his death a suicide by hanging. He is survived by six children from three relationships.
