A six-year-old child has tragically died in a massive fire that swept through Mlango in Mathare Constituency, destroying an estimated 2,000 homes.
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino took to social media to express his grief and anger over the incident, stating that the child died as the fire raged on while the community pleaded for help.
“Yesterday in Mlango, Mathare Constituency, we witnessed a heartbreaking tragedy. A little child, only six years old, lost his life in a fire as the community cried out for assistance from the Nairobi County Government under Governor Sakaja, which failed to respond in time. Fire engines reportedly arrived six hours later, and some lacked water to put out the blaze,” Owino said.
Residents said that no fire engine arrived promptly.
By the time help came, the fire had already destroyed around 2,000 homes and countless personal belongings. The remains of the child were found among the ashes, leaving the community in shock and mourning.
“The pain, anger, and sense of abandonment felt by the community are beyond words. Thousands are now homeless,” Owino added, calling for urgent action to improve emergency services in the city.
Residents attempted to salvage what they could as the fire raged, but the scale of the blaze left little that could be saved.
