A tragic incident left a toddler dead and her grandmother seriously injured after a house collapsed during heavy rains in Kituvu Village, Makindu Sub-County, Makueni County.
Police said the incident happened on March 21, 2026, at around 3:45 a.m.
Police visited the scene and established that the two-bedroom house was occupied by 55-year-old and her granddaughter, aged one year and seven months.
The two were asleep in the same bed when a bedroom wall suddenly gave way, collapsing inward and trapping them beneath the debris.
The child sustained fatal injuries and died at the scene.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the house had been constructed using unbaked bricks, which are believed to have absorbed rainwater overnight, weakening the structure and causing the collapse.
The woman suffered serious head and chest injuries and was rushed to Makindu Level 4 Hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment.
The scene was processed and documented by crime scene investigators, and the body of the deceased was moved to Kibwezi Funeral Home pending a postmortem examination.
Authorities have warned residents in rain-prone areas to ensure that houses are structurally sound, particularly those built with weak materials, to prevent similar incidents.
Meanwhile, a 40-year-old man died after being accidentally run over by a lorry at a mining site in the Turkana area of Pokot Central Sub-County, West Pokot County.

The driver was reversing a Renault lorry to load unrefined mining sand when he unknowingly ran over the victim, Dennis Yegon, who was reportedly resting within the site.
Colleagues at the scene made efforts to save Yegon’s life and rushed him to Kainuk Hospital.
However, he succumbed to his injuries while on the way.
The body was later taken to Marich Police Station before being transferred to Kapenguria Mortuary, where it awaits a postmortem examination.
Police officers from Marich Police Station, alongside detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Pokot Central, visited and documented the scene with the assistance of Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) personnel.
The lorry involved in the incident has been detained at Marich Police Station pending inspection. Meanwhile, the driver has been arrested and is currently assisting police with investigations into the incident.
