The Nairobi County Government Wednesday kicked off the installation of large, user-friendly, and visually striking dustbins across the Central Business District (CBD) in a renewed effort to keep the capital clean.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja confirmed the initiative, emphasizing the need to maintain the city’s cleanliness following a coordinated clean-up exercise led by the county’s Green Army under the Green Nairobi Department.

“Cleanliness is a collective responsibility,As the Green Army continues with their commendable efforts, let’s also play our part by not littering. We are beginning this project in the CBD and will move into residential estates in the next phase,” Sakaja said.

The sleek black bins, emblazoned with the slogan “Let’s Make Nairobi Clean” and adorned in county colors, have already begun appearing along major streets and highways in the city center.

Sakaja noted that the installation is part of a broader plan to establish Green Nairobi Limited, a county-owned company dedicated to sanitation and environmental sustainability.

“This plan has to work,i have said it before we can have a clean city. With proper coordination, Green Nairobi will oversee cleanups, manage garbage collection, create jobs, and help us realize the city we all want to live and work in.”

Multiple installation teams have been dispatched to cover designated streets, and the rollout will continue in the coming weeks. The Governor urged Nairobians to embrace the initiative and take pride in maintaining a litter-free city.

“We are calling on everyone to support this initiative by using the bins and respecting the environment,Let’s back the Green Army and work together for a cleaner, greener Nairobi,” he said.

The county has also entered into a waste-to-energy agreement aimed at converting waste at Dandora into energy, promoting sustainable waste management practices. To enforce this initiative, stringent penalties will be imposed on individuals and entities found dumping waste illegally.
