The Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Human Rights Violations has disbursed Sh83.7 million to victims under the latest phase of its compensation programme.

Panel chair Prof Makau Mutua said the panel had verified 259 claims during the latest phase of the programme.

The compensation covers various categories of harm suffered by civilian victims and uniformed officers who experienced human rights violations, including those arising from demonstrations and public protests.

“The Panel has processed claims under various categories of harm in this phase of the compensation programme that includes both civilian victims and uniformed officers who suffered human rights violations, including those arising from demonstrations and public protests,” Mutua said.

He said the panel continues to receive claims through its official channels and urged victims who have not yet submitted their claims to come forward for consideration.

“The Panel continues to receive submissions of claims through various official channels. Victims who have not yet come forward are urged to do so for consideration. We remain committed to ensuring no eligible individual is left behind,” Mutua said.

Mutua said every claim submitted to the panel undergoes verification and authentication before a decision is made.

He said claimants would be notified of the outcome of their applications in due course.

The panel also urged claimants to remain patient as the verification and compensation process continues.

The panel said it remains committed to accountability and will continue providing periodic public updates on the status of the programme.

“We stay engaged with victims and beneficiaries throughout this process. These interactions allow us to hear their concerns, clarify the status of claims, and ensure every eligible victim is treated fairly and with the dignity and respect they deserve,” Mutua said.

The latest disbursement adds to the funds already paid out under the compensation programme.

In July, the Panel of Experts on Compensation of Victims of Human Rights Violations announced that it had disbursed Sh674.1 million to 505 victims of human rights violations stemming from demonstrations and public protests.

The panel said the compensation programme covers victims whose claims have been verified and authenticated in accordance with the established process.

It continues to assess submissions and engage with victims and beneficiaries as it works through the claims.

The panel said the process is intended to ensure that eligible victims receive compensation while maintaining verification and accountability in the use of funds.
