Civil Society Reference Group (CSRG) has asked the government to use humane approaches in dealing with the Mau Forest encroachers to avoid wanton violation of human rights witnessed recently.

They however also called on the encroachers to vacate the forest and instead of refusing to leave, engage constructively with the authorities in negotiations that can facilitate compensation of those with genuine title deeds and help them relocate to alternative areas.

They said that the evictions would end the political ping pong that is usually used to gain political mileage during the political period. They also asked that the settlers who were given tittle deeds to be compensated as part of the resettlement package.

CSRG has also condemned the unrest in schools that have been characterized by arson and arrest of several students as a result. They however asked the relevant authorities to treat the students in a humane manner.

They are concerned that children suspected of arson are been detained in custody as adults contrary to the Constitution and the children ‘s act.

“The CSRG is considering going to the High Court to terminate all cases currently instituted against affected students on grounds that they breach the constitutional protection and safeguards of the students as minors,”the CSRG said in a statement.

They said that the required procedures for prosecuting minors were no followed hence infringing the rights of the minors.
