
The Kenya National Commission On Human Rights (KNCHR) Chairperson Kagwiria Mbogori has given the Chinese workers an ultimatum to learn the national languages or they will push for the revocation of their visas.

She said that the communication barrier was a major contributor in the mistreatment and discrimination that the Kenyan workers working in the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) have been facing.
“Our view is that no migrant worker should be allowed to work in Kenya if they cant express themselves fluently in English or Kiswahili,” Ms Mbogori stated.
The Labour CS Ukur Yattani had indicated to the senate committee on labor and social welfare that the Chinese were currently undertaking language classes to improve communication. He further stated that they had incorporated translators in the Mombasa – Nairobi terminal.
The labor CS said that the main issue between the Chinese employers and the employees was that the employers were young and high expectations but he reiterated that the ministry was working closely with them to improve labor relations.
