Council of Governors condemns alleged assault on Samburu governor

The Council of Governors strongly condemned what it describes as a “shocking and unacceptable assault” on Lelelit Lati, allegedly involving members of the Senate of Kenya.

In a statement signed by its Chairman Ahmed Abdullahi, the council termed the incident as an act of hooliganism that undermines the dignity of the governor’s office and threatens constitutional order.

The council argued that the alleged violence violates the principles enshrined in the Constitution of Kenya, including respect for human dignity, the rule of law, and peaceful conduct in public affairs.

While noting that the Senate is constitutionally mandated to safeguard the interests of county governments, the council expressed concern that the institution had allegedly resorted to “witch-hunting, harassment, violence and intimidation.”

The governors further warned that such actions signal a breakdown in democratic norms and erode public trust in leadership, especially at a time when cooperation between national and county governments is critical.

They have now called on the Speaker of the Senate to publicly condemn the alleged actions by the senators involved and fast-track mechanisms to address concerns raised against members of the County Public Accounts Committee.

The council also indicated that the alleged assault may amount to a criminal offence, adding that legal action could be pursued.

The statement concluded with a call to all state actors to uphold accountability, restraint, and respect for human rights in order to safeguard constitutional order and restore integrity in public institutions.

There is a standoff between the governors and the Senate over summons on the former.

This is over audit reports that the governors have refused to appear in the Senate for deliberations.

On Wednesday, Speaker Amason Kingi ordered Sergeant-at-Arms to escort Lelelit to Parliament Police Station after he was spotted within Parliament precincts, over a warrant issued for failing to appear before the Senate watchdog committee despite several summons.

    This sparked the drama.
