The High Court in Kibera sentenced a young man to 40 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of his employer in Kabete, Dagoreti Sub-County, Nairobi.
Delivering the sentence, Justice Diana Kavedza said the circumstances surrounding the killing were particularly disturbing and aggravated the offence, despite the accused saving the court’s time by admitting to the charge.
The court heard that the convict killed his employer, Miriam Wangari, in 2021 before proceeding to dismember her body. Parts of her remains, including her head and limbs, have never been recovered.
Justice Kavedza observed that the brutality of the act went beyond the unlawful killing itself, noting that the dismemberment demonstrated extreme disregard for human dignity.
“The accused not only caused the death of the deceased but went further to mutilate her body,” the judge said in her ruling, adding that the conduct significantly compounded the gravity of the crime.
The court further noted that the failure to recover all body parts has denied Wangari’s family the opportunity to give their loved one a dignified and complete burial, deepening their trauma and emotional suffering.
While acknowledging the guilty plea as a mitigating factor that spared witnesses and the family the ordeal of a full trial, the judge ruled that the seriousness of the offence warranted a lengthy custodial sentence.
The man will serve 40 years in prison.
The case adds to a growing list of violent crimes that have shocked residents in parts of Nairobi, particularly in Dagoreti Sub-County, where the gruesome nature of the killing left the local community reeling.
