Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir has established a special Aircraft Accident Investigation Team to review reports of air accidents involving Kenyan-registered or operated aircraft that occurred in South Sudan and Somalia over the past five years.

The announcement was made through a gazette notice dated May 16, 2025. According to the notice, the team will be led by Peter Maranga as the Chairperson. Fredrick Kabunge will serve as the Co-chairperson, while Fredrick Aggrey takes the role of Vice-chairperson.

Other members of the team include Captain Nduati Herman Njama, Retired Lieutenant Colonel Mike Mulwa, Ephantus Kamau, Captain Valentine Wendoh, and James Mwangi. The joint secretaries appointed to support the team are Brenda Mwango, Mathias Ombasa, and Albert Mwangeka.

“The Team is mandated to review all the preliminary accident reports for accidents involving Kenyan registered or operated aircraft presented by the Republic of South Sudan and the Federal Republic of Somalia, for the last five years,” the gazette notice reads.

They may also investigate other related matters and recommend actions to prevent future accidents. The team has the authority to evaluate data, examine materials, conduct interviews, and engage stakeholders in the aviation industry to establish facts and verify the accuracy of the reports.

In addition, the team has the freedom to co-opt experts or other individuals they consider necessary to help in their investigations.

According to the gazette notice, the team will serve for a period of three months from the date of the notice. However, the Cabinet Secretary may extend the team’s term if needed.

At the end of its assignment, the team is expected to submit a detailed report to the Cabinet Secretary, including recommendations aimed at improving aviation safety in Kenya.
