The Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Rebecca Miano, has provided an update on the alleged disappearance of Brian Odhiambo, who was reportedly last seen in the hands of six Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers in Nakuru.
Miano appeared before the National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Tourism and Wildlife, chaired by Maara MP Kareke Mbiuki, alongside Wildlife PS Silvia Museiya and KWS Director General Dr. Erastus Kanga.
Dr. Kanga told MPs that investigations into the case, which is pending before the Nakuru Law Courts, revealed that a multi-agency search involving family members, the media, activists, and security agencies was misled by a false informant.
“The informant gave conflicting directions, pointed to hotel flower beds, and later admitted he had no knowledge of any mass grave,” said Kanga. He added that a DCI report confirmed the claims were false and legal action will be taken against the informant.
When Nakuru Town East MP David Gikaria asked about the definition of “illegal fishing” in relation to Brian’s case, Mbiuki cautioned members against discussing matters that are before court.
On human-wildlife conflict, Chepalungu MP Victor Koech raised concerns about delayed response and compensation in Bomet. Kanga said KWS teams in Kabason, Kabolwo, and Nairutia are active and well-equipped. He noted that the family of the late Kelvin Kipkemoi Neotich had received Sh30,000, while a total of Sh981,812 had been paid to 19 claimants since 2014.
Koech also pushed for more Corporate Social Responsibility projects in affected areas. Kanga responded, “I have received your letter and we will give it priority.”
The committee also discussed the presidential directive to open the Malka Halaku Livestock Corridor. Miano proposed forming a multi-stakeholder task force, but Garsen MP Ali Wario dismissed the idea as a “delay tactic to deny justice.”
Miano defended the proposal, saying it was meant to “streamline the process with all key players, including community leaders.”
Mbiuki closed the session by urging government agencies to provide solutions rather than citing budget constraints.
