Cabinet Secretary for Co-operatives and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya has appointed a National Steering Committee and County Steering Committees to lead the revival of the coffee sector through co-operatives for the next two years.

The appointment was announced through a gazette notice dated October 31, 2025. Oparanya said the committees began their work immediately.

The National Steering Committee will be chaired by Njeru Ndwiga, with Daniel Chemno and James Wachihi Muturi serving as vice chairpersons.

Other members include Timothy Mirugi, Laura Wanjiru, Charles Rintaugu, Kennedy Kilwake, Okioma Mwancha, and Caroline Cherotich. The team also consists of David Obonyo, Henry Kinyua, Dr. Elijah Gichuru, Felix Mutwiri, Felix Miano, and Richard Kiprono Magut.

The committee is tasked with preparing and submitting a report to the Cabinet Secretary on revitalizing the coffee sector through co-operatives.

It will also develop strategies to introduce coffee farming in new regions and revive production in traditional coffee-growing areas. Mobilizing financial resources to support coffee co-operatives is also part of its mandate.

At the county level, each Steering Committee will be chaired by the County Commissioner, with the County CEC for Agriculture or Co-operatives as co-chair.

The County New KPCU representative will serve as secretary, while other members will include county officers and co-operative representatives.

“The County Steering Committee shall have similar functions to the National Steering Committee at the County level and shall report on progress and outcomes to the National Steering Committee,” the notice reads.
