Cyber threats in the country are on the increase, PS Omollo says

The country continued to experience a rise in cyber threats in the past months.

Interior Principal Secretary Dr Raymond Omollo said in October 2025, there was a sharp rise in cyber threats, including ransomware, data breaches, and AI-driven scams.

“This has prompted the government to introduce some measures to address the menace,” he said.

He added misinformation and disinformation around amendments to the Computer Misuse and Cybercrime Act (2024) highlighted the need for enhanced digital literacy and cybersecurity measures.

He made the remarks at the monthly Principal Secretaries and Accounting Officers Coordination Meeting chaired by the Head of Public Service, Felix Koskei.

He added the interception of a Sh8 billion narcotics consignment off the coast of Mombasa was among the most notable security developments of the month.

The suspects were arrested on October 24, 2025 at Kilindini Port, following a multi-agency operation that led to the seizure of 769 packages of crystalline substances suspected to be synthetic narcotic drugs, weighing 1,035.986 kilograms.

The operation followed intelligence shared by the Kenya Navy on a suspicious “dark vessel” operating in the Indian Ocean without proper identification.

“The operation reaffirmed to the world Kenya’s growing cooperation in tackling transnational crime, including narco trafficking,” he said.

Omollo said public order management remained a challenge, following chaotic scenes and fatalities during the public viewings of the late Raila Odinga, which briefly disrupted operations at the JKIA and Kasarani Stadium.

At least five people were killed in the chaos.

He said national examinations were also delivered successfully across all regions through coordinated efforts of Deputy County Commissioners’ offices and the National Command Centre.

The government also recovered over 600 illegal firearms in the North Rift amid continued banditry and protests along the Isiolo–Meru corridor, while renewed inter-communal tensions in Trans Mara led to casualties and property loss.

More than five people were killed in the area prompting an operation. This was fanned by cattle rustling.

At the Namanga border, tensions linked to Tanzania’s elections were swiftly contained. “Meanwhile, there was also a tragic plane crash in Kwale County involving 10 European tourists and a Kenyan pilot, testing our emergency coordination systems,” he said.

The month ended with floods and landslides from ongoing short rains caused deaths, injuries, and destruction of property, with Elgeyo Marakwet the worst-hit following the loss of lives.

At least 32 people were killed in the landslide that was reported on October 31, 2025 in the area. Tens others were displaced.
