The Daily Nation on Wednesday was forced to apologize to athletics legend Kipchoge Keino for a rather misleading headline “Athletics Legend On The Run.”

Keino is among others whose prosecution over the misuse of Sh55 million meant for the 2016 Rio Olympics has been ordered by DPP Noordin Haji.

“A headline on the front page of yesterday’s Daily Nation may have created the impression that athletics legend Kichoge Keino’s whereabouts were unknown and that he was on the run from the law in connection with corruption charges facing him and others regarding the management of the 2016 Rio Olympics,” the apology published on page 2 of the daily reads in part.

The legend, the Nation reported is away in Mexico receiving an award on behalf of a Kenyan team of disabled athletes.

“We apologise to Mr Keino, his associates and our readers for any embarrassment or misunderstanding that the headline may have caused.”

On Monday a court gave him till Thursday 6 am to present himself at the DCI offices and then appear in court Friday to enter pleas.

Should he not appear on Friday, the presiding judge noted that there will be a warrant of arrest against him.

Haji on Saturday said that that he (Keino), PS Richard Ekai, Harun Komen, Stephen Kiptanui, Patrick Kimathi, ex Sports CS Hassan Wario and Francis Kanyili may have overseen the embezzlement of Sh22.4 million, purchase of air tickets which were not utilized amounting to Sh16.8 million, overpayment of allowances amounting to Sh15.9 and incurring expenditure on unauthorized persons amounting to Sh6.5 million.
