The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has announced a major breakthrough in the investigation into the fatal shooting of former Africa Institute of Mental and Brain Health Director Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, revealing that serving and former police officers were involved in the murder and that investigators have recovered the firearm used in the killing.
In a detailed update issued on August 7, 2026, DCI Director Mohamed Amin said the investigation has been driven by forensic science, intelligence gathering and collaboration among specialised investigative units.
According to the DCI, Dr Mutiso was shot dead on July 29, 2026 while travelling in an Uber after leaving Tanga Heights Apartment on Bamboo Lane, off Riara Road, for the Africa Institute of Mental and Brain Health in Upper Hill.
Investigators said the Uber encountered a black Toyota Prado that had partially blocked the road in the Mawensi area of Upper Hill before gunshots were fired at Dr Mutiso from the rear left side of the vehicle. The driver managed to flee and rushed her to Kenyatta National Hospital, where she was pronounced dead after sustaining three gunshot wounds.
The DCI said the investigation was immediately taken over by its Homicide Investigations Bureau, assisted by experts from the National Police Forensic Laboratory, the Criminal Research and Intelligence Bureau and other specialised units.
Through forensic analysis, CCTV examination and intelligence-led investigations, detectives identified Daniel Mwangi Njoroge and Kelvin Ngugi Kinuthia as key suspects.
According to the investigators, Daniel Mwangi Njoroge played a central role in organising the operation and was the driver of Toyota Land Cruiser Prado registration KDH 600A, which was allegedly used to block the Uber vehicle moments before the shooting.
The DCI further established that two Toyota Prado vehicles, registration numbers KDE 400W and KDH 600A, were used to transport members of the execution team. Detectives traced the vehicles to a car hire arrangement, with the owner confirming they had been hired by Daniel Mwangi Njoroge on July 27, 2026, before being returned on July 30, 2026.
Investigators also linked the murder to a long-running land dispute involving parcel L.R. No. 1504/13 in Mlolongo, Athi River Sub-County.
According to the DCI, evidence gathered points to Rose Mbithe Mulwa, the former wife of Dr Mutiso’s late husband Prof. David Musyimi Ndetei, and her son Christopher Mulwa (Chris Mulwa) as the primary organisers and financiers of the alleged conspiracy.
The statement notes that the pair have already been detained following an application by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions to allow investigators additional time to complete critical inquiries.
The DCI also disclosed that Dr Mutiso had survived an earlier suspected assassination attempt on July 7, 2026, when two men on a motorcycle allegedly pointed a gun at her while she was driving near Junction Mall along Ngong Road. She escaped unharmed and reported the incident at Kilimani Police Station.
Investigators are also pursuing leads suggesting that some of the suspects could be linked to the drive-by shooting of lawyer Kyalo Mbobu along Magadi Road on September 9, 2025.
The DCI appealed to members of the public with any information that could assist the investigations to report through established DCI channels, assuring them that all information would be treated with strict confidentiality.
Director Amin commended officers drawn from the Homicide Investigations Bureau, the National Police Forensic Laboratory, the Criminal Research and Intelligence Bureau and other specialised units for their handling of the complex investigation.
“Their professionalism, courage, meticulous attention to forensic detail, and unwavering commitment to the pursuit of truth have been exemplary,” Amin said.
He added that investigations remain active and that authorities are determined to identify, arrest and prosecute everyone involved in the killing, including financiers, organisers, suppliers of the firearm, surveillance operatives and any other facilitators.
The DCI said further updates will be provided as investigations progress.
