The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has taken over investigations into the death of former Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a fatal road accident on the night of December 13, 2025.

The crash occurred at the Karai area along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway and involved Jirongo’s private vehicle and a public service vehicle (PSV) bus operated by Climax Coach. Preliminary findings indicate the collision happened at about 2:19 a.m., resulting in a head-on impact that propelled Jirongo’s vehicle roughly 25 metres from the point of impact, while the bus came to rest approximately 50 metres away.

In line with its mandate, the DCI deployed a combined team of homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory to the scene. The team conducted preliminary examinations, documented the scene and secured key exhibits to aid the probe.

Detectives recovered CCTV footage from Eagle Petrol Station, which has undergone initial review and analysis. According to investigators, the footage shows that at 2:18:40 a.m., Jirongo drove into the petrol station from the Nairobi direction but did not fuel. At 2:19:10 a.m., his vehicle stopped at the station’s exit and, at 2:19:19 a.m., made a right turn back towards Nairobi. Moments later, at 2:19:25 a.m., the CCTV captured the PSV bus ramming into Jirongo’s vehicle.

The bus driver, Tyrus Kamau Githinji, has been interrogated by detectives after earlier recording a statement at the Naivasha Traffic Base. He has been released on cash bail pending further investigations into the offence of causing death by dangerous driving and is required to report back to the Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22, 2025.

Investigators have also interviewed the petrol station’s night guard and fuel attendant, both of whom gave accounts of the events on the night of the crash. The forensic team is scheduled to revisit the scene for further analysis as inquiries continue.

As part of the wider probe, detectives are examining Jirongo’s movements prior to the accident, including recording statements from individuals he interacted with that night, notably those present during a meeting at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi. Further analysis of the CCTV footage is ongoing, and additional statements will be recorded from passengers who were aboard the Climax Coach bus and other witnesses.

Upon completion of investigations, police say a comprehensive file will be compiled and forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for review and guidance.

The DCI conveyed its condolences to the family, friends and relatives of Cyrus Jirongo and assured the public of its commitment to conducting thorough, impartial and credible investigations in accordance with the Constitution of Kenya and the rule of law.
