    Death Toll Rises to 15 in Elgeyo Marakwet Landslides, 30 Still Missing

    The death toll from the landslides in Elgeyo Marakwet County has risen to 15, while 30 people remain unaccounted for, the government has said.

    Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, in an update on Saturday, said rescue work is ongoing, led by a multi-agency team involving the military, police, National Government Administration Officers, the county government, and humanitarian organizations.

    “We have managed to evacuate 25 injured people for further medical attention. Sadly, 15 people lost their lives in this unfortunate tragedy, while 30 people are still unaccounted for,” Murkomen stated.

    Earlier, the CS announced that police and military helicopters carrying medical teams and Red Cross personnel had been deployed to support search and rescue operations in the affected villages.

    He said households in danger of further landslides have been moved to safer grounds, and a reporting desk for missing persons has been established.

    “Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Endo, Sambirir, and Embobut Wards in Marakwet East Constituency following the devastating landslide that has led to the loss of lives and destruction of property and infrastructure, including roads,” Murkomen said.

    He added that the government is working with the county administration and aid agencies to support affected families.

    “Efforts are also underway to restore the destroyed road network to allow emergency teams to access the affected areas,” he noted.

    Local leaders have urged residents in landslide-prone areas to relocate as heavy rains continue across the region.
