The University of Nairobi is staring a bleak future under the watch of Prof Peter Mbithi and the chancellor Vijoo Ratanssi. The duo having milked the institution dry.
Information reaching Kahawa Tungu reveals that the institution is having a big hole in its cashbooks. This has left the institution indebted to suppliers and workers.
Mbithi has thus resorted to overdrafts to pay salaries and suppliers, but things have gone from bad to worse. This is after several banks blacklisted the once prestigious institution from overdraft facilities, leaving him at crossroads.
With a new council in place, Mbithi is a troubled man, now looking for ways to block the council from knowing the evils happening behind closed doors.
In fact, sources within the university intimate that he has made sure that the new council remain in the dark, lest they order for an audit that will see the end of Prof Mbithi at the helm.
He therefore does not trust anyone with the financial book, lest they leak the information but it is estimated that the institution owes suppliers more than Ksh6 billion dating back to 2016.
The files are kept under the watch of once suspended finance officer Peter Businei. Despite being suspended, Mbithi allowed him back to the office, since he could trust no one else to keep the filthy secret.
The university is thus tricking suppliers by having many prequalified suppliers, and hopping from one to the other. When they object, Mbithi uses petty cash in expenses and to buy food.
This has affected supply of food in the cafeterias, which can now feed only 30 per cent of the student population.

For Mbithi, he wants to keep the new council at bay for as long as possible. Intel states that he is seeking services of lawyers and activists to secure court injunctions to bar the council from operating.
Worse still, Mbithi is playing the victim and has s far approached top Jubilee and Wiper Party politicians seeking intervention. His claims are that his enemies are after him, and wants to oust him.
On top of it all, he has been at the centre of student politics and leadership, setting students against each other through rigging and handouts.
The result of it all, the university health services clinic lacks medicine.
The cooperative union has virtually collapsed, the pension scheme has been wiped clean and is owed billions of unremitted staff and employer contributions. Kenya Revenue Authority taxes have not been remitted, as well as the National Hospital Insurance Fund deductions.
Promotions and new employments are done to please his cronies and protect his interests. Only those who play by his rules and can be bribed are promoted, while others are despised.
Dons are working just for the sake, giving the whole scenario ‘a matter of time’.
