Detectives are investigating an incident where the two decomposing bodies, one for a man and one for a woman, were discovered in a septic tank in Mbale, Vihiga County.

The discovery was made on January 13, 2026 behind a building housing a bank, police said.

One of the bodies was that of Humphrey Mbarang’a, 43 and a casual worker in Mbale town.

According to the family, the deceased Mbarang’a disappeared on 24th December 24, 2025.

The grieving family said the deceased left home in high spirits, ready to celebrate Christmas day, but he never came back home.

The deceased’s mother, Jane Kasigane, said his son took tea very well and left for Mbale town to seek his daily bread.

She said that after the disappearance of his son, they tried as a family to look for him with no success.

She says they decided to report the matter to the Mbale police Station.

Police said the two bodies, one for Humphrey Mbarang’a and an unidentified lady, were discovered after locals complained of a bad smell.

Police suspect the two victims might have been killed elsewhere and their bodies dumped in the septic tank.

The bodies were moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and identification.

Elsewhere, police in Manga Sub-County, Nyamira County, launched investigations into a tragic incident in which a mother is suspected to have poisoned her two young children before also dying under similar circumstances.

The bodies of the woman, identified as Eunice Moturi, and her two children—a nine-year-old girl and a six-year-old boy—were found near a riverside in Isincha Village, Kiogutwa Sub-location.

The circumstances surrounding the deaths remain unclear.

Tombe Sub-location Chief Abel Oroti confirmed the incident, noting that preliminary observations point to poisoning as the likely cause of death.

He added, however, that police have commenced comprehensive investigations to establish the events leading up to the tragedy.

Authorities have urged members of the public to refrain from speculation as investigations continue.

Police moved the bodies to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other procedures.
