    Early Life

Delroy George Lindo was born on November 18, 1952, in Lewisham, London, England. He grew up in Eltham to Jamaican parents—his mother was a nurse, and his father worked in various jobs. Lindo’s interest in acting began in childhood after participating in a school nativity play.

As a teenager, he moved with his mother to Toronto, Canada, and later settled in San Francisco, California at age 16. Lindo trained at the American Conservatory Theater, graduating in the late 1970s. He also earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from San Francisco State University in 2004 and a Master of Fine Arts from New York University’s Gallatin School in 2014. In 2021, he was named Alumnus of the Year by San Francisco State University.

Early Career in Theater and Film

Lindo began acting on screen in the mid-1970s, appearing in TV episodes such as Police Surgeon (1974) and films including Partners (1976) and Find the Lady (1976). By 1979, he appeared in More American Graffiti, marking his first major studio film role.

Throughout the 1980s, Lindo focused heavily on theater, performing in productions like Macbeth, A Raisin in the Sun, and August Wilson’s Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, earning a Tony nomination for the latter.

    Breakthrough in Film

Lindo’s career breakthrough came in the 1990s through collaborations with Spike Lee, appearing in Malcolm X (1992), Crooklyn (1994), and Clockers (1995). His ability to portray morally complex, authoritative figures earned him critical acclaim. Other notable films included Get Shorty (1995), Ransom (1996), Broken Arrow (1996), and The Cider House Rules (1999).

TV appearances included roles on Kidnapped (2006–2007), The Chicago Code (2011), and The Good Fight (2017–2021).

    Career Renaissance

Lindo experienced a late-career resurgence with Spike Lee’s Da 5 Bloods (2020), delivering an award-winning performance that reaffirmed his status as one of Hollywood’s most formidable character actors.

In 2025, he starred in Ryan Coogler’s supernatural thriller Sinners, portraying blues legend Delta Slim. The role earned him his first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 2026, marking a historic milestone in his career.

During this period, Lindo also appeared on PBS’s Finding Your Roots and joined franchises such as Godzilla x Kong: Supernova.
