Dougie Hamilton is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenseman for the New Jersey Devils in the National Hockey League (NHL).
Born on June 17, 1993, in Toronto, he stands at 6’6″ and weighs around 230 pounds.
He shoots right and is known for his exceptional skating ability, powerful shot, offensive instincts, and towering reach as a mobile defenseman.
Drafted ninth overall by the Boston Bruins in 2011, Hamilton has established himself as one of the league’s top offensive blue-liners across multiple teams.
Siblings
Dougie has one older brother, Freddie Hamilton, who is also a former professional hockey player.
Freddie was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the fifth round of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft and went on to play in the NHL for teams including the Colorado Avalanche, Calgary Flames, and Arizona Coyotes.
The brothers played together in junior hockey with the Niagara IceDogs and later suited up as teammates for the Calgary Flames, creating memorable moments on the ice.

Career
Hamilton developed through the Ontario Hockey League with the Niagara IceDogs, where he excelled offensively and earned several league honors.
He made his NHL debut with the Boston Bruins and spent time with the team before being traded to the Calgary Flames in 2015.
After a successful stint in Calgary, he signed with the Carolina Hurricanes as a free agent in 2018 and then joined the New Jersey Devils in 2021 on a long-term contract.
With the Devils, Hamilton elevated his production, notably recording a career-high 22 goals and 74 points in the 2022-23 season, helping the team return to playoff contention.
Known for his ability to quarterback the power play and transition the puck effectively, he has been a key veteran presence mentoring younger players like Luke Hughes while playing alongside stars such as Jack Hughes and Nico Hischier.
Despite some injury challenges in recent seasons, Hamilton has remained a consistent offensive threat from the blue line into the 2025-26 campaign.
Accolades
In the OHL, Hamilton won the Max Kaminsky Trophy as the league’s most outstanding defenseman and was named to the First All-Star Team.
He has twice been selected to the NHL Second All-Star Team and has appeared in multiple NHL All-Star Games.
Hamilton holds the single-season record for goals by a Devils defenseman with 22 in 2022-23.
His international experience includes representing Canada at the World Junior Championship.
